I have made a little progress on my ‘Christmas Baubles’ kit by Kate Barlow, and as it is goldwork embroidery, padding is everything. Felt is used as padding and the kit came with pre-marked felt that simply needed to be cut out and applied to each bauble.
I started with the largest bauble which needed 4 layers of padding…..
The second bauble needed three layers of padding…..
While the final bauble simply needed two layers….
And that is as much as I have managed to complete (simply because my mind wanders onto other projects). But at least now I can start on the fun part of adding colour and sparkle.
I am just starting my journey on this SAL, but if you want to see more experienced members – Please check out the fabulous stitching that they do. If you are interested in joining us you can contact Avis for details.

Ooh, this is going to be interesting to watch, looking forward to seeing the sparkles 🙂
Thank you, so am I!
You’ve applied lots of padding! It’s incredible how much is needed for a project isn’t it. Can’t wait for the colour to appear!
As we are always told, it’s all in the preparation! Looking forward to adding the sparkle though!
oooh I’m really looking forward to seeing how you do this technique.
Thanks Claire, next step is adding the coloured leathers.
That’s going to make some plump and beautiful baubles. Prep work can be a bit ‘meh’ but once you start covering that padding I think it’ll really come to life.
I am hoping so, next step is the metallic leather!
Goodness, it’s going to be quite an adventure, isn’t it!
Hopefully with a worthwhile destination!
What a prep job on this, now for the payoff! Have fun with the next steps, I look forward to watching this progress. Your buttonhole stitch is gorgeous!
Thank you Kathy, yep now all the prep is done I can have a little fun!
Very pretty, great progress
Thank you – it’s slow progress, but at least it is in the right direction!
It’s going to be interesting to see how this develops. Very unusual!
Thank you, I just love goldwork, even at this stage!
Such a cool process for this project. Definitely looking forward to seeing the stitches over the felt!
Thank you, I really enjoy the process of prepping for goldwork – but I enjoy the sparkle more!
I am going to enjoy following along with this one.
Just hope I can finish!
These are going to be fun to see develop. I’m with you on being distracted by other projects. I get distracted a lot.
Ha ha, yes I have a wondering eye!
Looking forward to seeing your progress!
Thank you, hopefully I can keep it up!
Oooh this looks rather interesting ! Curious to see when the sparkly sets in !
Metallic leather next!
Even your prepwork is neat and tidy — I can’t wait to see the sparkly colors get added!!!
Thank you, it’s all in the prep!
Oh such a lot of work already and non of this will show. However as this looks as though its going to be a stunning piece I think all the groundwork is going to be worth it.
I hope so!
Wow, this is a new way of making an embroidery! At least for me! looking forward to see the development on this embroidery!!!!
I love goldwork – all sparkles!
This SAL is a great way to get these made by Christmas Deborah. Your scissors look interesting too. What brand are they? Are they specifically for cutting felt or just all round embroidery scissors?
Do you know I have just misplaced them somewhere and I can’t remember the make. I picked them up at Hampton Court and really liked them.
It looks like loads of progress to me! I’ve never done gold work – is very interesting to follow what your doing! Hopefully the SAL will help you continue?
Thank you, I discovered goldwork a couple of years ago and really enjoy it.
