Scrappy pencil case…

I had a few charm squares left after making my Christmas tote bags so I decided to use them to make a little pencil case. I didn’t want to buy another pattern and thought that I should be able to work out a pattern for myself. I started by sewing 6 small charm squares together in two rows of three. To one end I added a slightly larger red panel (about the length of two charm squares). I then made up a second panel in the same way for the back of the pencil case. The two sides were then joined together by a long strip of co-ordinating fabric and an iron on interfacing was applied to the back of the whole piece.

Onto the front large red panel I then appliqued a small robin.

I laid down the outside panel, right side facing upwards, the zip right side down and a lining fabric – also right side down. Using the zipper foot I then sewed these three pieces together along the zipper length.

Then (and this a little hard to explain) – I sewed the other side of both the outer and lining fabric to the other side of the zip. It is probably easier to look at the pictures below. With the zip half way open, sew along the edges leaving a small gap to turn the case in the right way.

Turn inside the right way…. and sew up the gap in the lining.

Of course I didn’t stop there – made a few more and included a little hand stitching at the point I added the interfacing- and that is a few presents for some of the younger names on my Christmas list!

Great fun and really quick to do.

Hope you are having a happy stitching day too!

About wybrow1966

My name is Deborah, and my earliest recollection of being creative is learning how to smock at primary school. We had a wonderful, white-haired lady who came in once a week to teach the 'girls' how to sew. I am not sure what the boys got up to during this time - but I never once felt as though I was missing out on anything. Now, as a primary teacher, I often give up evenings to teach enthusiastic children how to embroider. I am now just about to embarked into the world of blogging. Who knows if anyone will be interested, or if I can even keep it up. But here goes....
