Feeling those January blues at the moment – but did manage some progress on my little stumpwork fish project by the Bluebird Embroidery Company. As with the Christmas baubles kit, this one also starts by preparing a felt padding which (this time) is then stuffed to create a base for the needlework.
The eye and the gill of the fish are then made by sewing a few very small stab stitches before sewing up the tail end. The next step was to embroider the body of the fish on the calico using long and short stitch. I managed to get about three quarters of the way through this – so here is my final progress…
Thank you for popping in. Happy stitching and I hope to see you all in another 3 weeks.
A big welcome to our new members Mary Margaret, Renee and Jenny. I hope you enjoy being part of our expanding group. Look forward to seeing you projects.
We are a small group of crafters using a variety of different techniques. Please check out the fabulous stitching by all the other members of the SAL. If you are interested in joining us you can contact Avis for details.

I’m very intrigued to see what happens next
First I have to complete the fish and then I wrap it around the padding.
ah! so it’s going to be brooch, or something similar? not like the baubles, which turned into a padded picture.
I think so – it is a very small project piece – but I will wait until it is finished before I make the final decision.
This is an interesting kit, a few different ways of doing things! I look forward to seeing him next time!
There are a lot of different techniques for such a small kit.
Looks beautiful and can’t wait to see how it develops 🤗
However it develops – it will be slowly. xx
It’s going to be another fascinating piece, just like the baubles.
I hope so – thank you
Beautiful stitching. I’m intrigued to see how it all comes together.
Thank you – it will be a while yet!
I’m looking forward to seeing your fish develop!
Thank you – it may take a little time!
I was wondering how this works, but I see now that you will put the embroidered fish on top of the padded one. I was first thinking picture, and was I confused! This looks challenging. Well done!
You have got it – the embroidery goes over the top of the padding and then the fins are made separately.
What a clever way to make a brooch! Looks great so far.
Thank you – hope it works.
Looks good, I’m always worried about getting the stitching to fit in exactly the right place.
I suppose you could always add an extra mm or so around the edges – just to make sure.
Learning so much from your projects! Sorry you are feeling those January blues, they are felt in my household too. We’re taking vitamin D supplements to get us through it. Hope this little fishy will bring you smiles and joy 🙂
I think it is just that you get used to having time to spend with people over Christmas and then in January it is back to work – and I now have to wait until half term to get out again!
I know that feeling as well! Looking forward to taking some vacation time in March!
And lighter mornings!
Your projects always inspire me — so many techniques I’ve never seen before! I look forward to seeing the continued development of your fish!!!
It is going to be slow progress as I have quite a bit on the go at the moment!
Cant wait to see more of this. I find stump work fascinating.
I love stumpwork too – as long as it is not people as I always find their faces look very strange!
This looks really complicated and very detailed. I am looking forward to seeing it progress.
It could be very slow progress!
You always have something new and interesting to stitch on! I like it!!
Thank you Adrian – like to try new things!
Ooooh this is really interesting. I look forward to seeing how it grows
Thank you
Another awesome project to get me all interested in different embroidery (soooo tempting!)
Looks good so far!
Go on – give it a go!
Thank you for the warm welcome to the group! I cannot wait to see how your fish looks in your next update!
It might take quite a long time!
